TWENTY-TWO

Kingsbridge Station, Dublin, Friday, 27th July

As if the heavens were in accord with Fergus’s fractious mood, the current spell of glorious weather broke with yet another violent thunderstorm. Dubliners scurried along the pavement, heads bent against the driving rain and wind. Fergus, however, was preoccupied as he stared out of the police carriage. In his pocket was the telegram from the RIC, the police force in Cork, confirming Carver had boarded the Dublin train that morning.

Traffic on the quays was moving at a snail’s pace due to the rain, ratcheting up Fergus’s anxiety. If they missed the train, Carver might get to Merrion Square before they intercepted him. The last thing Fergus wanted was to have to arrest Carver while Olivia was there. She was distressed enough.

So, they were headed to Kingsbridge to intercept and arrest him.

Fergus was so het up, he didn’t even mind being squashed inside the confines of a malodorous police carriage with three burly constables, handpicked by Sergeant Hughes. Jackson, Moore and Geraghty were a formidable threesome of DMP constables, feared throughout the city, with just cause. Jackson, or to give him his street-name ‘The Paw’, was a native Dubliner like himself. Standing well over six foot, he had been known to pursue suspects for miles on foot before his mighty hands would descend on the poor unfortunate and they were hauled off to the nearest police station. No, Fergus was confident Carver had no chance of eluding his men. However, when he glanced at his watch and saw the time, he groaned. The train was due on the hour, and it was five minutes to already.

Thankfully, the traffic eased, and they swept past the black entrance gates of the Guinness brewery at St James’ Gate, and soon, despite the deluge, the imposing granite façade of Kingsbridge Station loomed on the horizon. The forecourt was busy with a tight press of cabs, carriages and trams close to the entrance. Large groups of people were gathered under the portico, sheltering while porters procured their cabs. Anxiety nipped at Ryan. What if they missed Carver in the crush?

The carriage pulled up, and they piled out, dashing for the cover of the front portico of the station building. Fergus was aware of the wary expressions of onlookers, some of whom moved to stand further away, even risking getting wet. Oh, the power of a police uniform.

‘Now, lads, we can’t afford to mess this up,’ Fergus said, eyeing them each in turn. He patted his pocket. ‘We know he’s on the Cork train. When I spot him, I’ll point him out. He won’t be expecting us, so we have the advantage of surprise. However, we must nab him before he breaches the barriers and disappears into these crowds.’

‘Sir,’ the officers replied in unison.

Fergus hailed a passing porter. ‘Which platform for the Cork train?’

‘Number four, sir,’ the man said, pointing to the far right of the interior of the station. ‘Due any minute.’

‘Follow me,’ Fergus ordered, striding off into the melee of the ticket hall, adrenaline pumping.
